Disappointing The Software Giant's Results Erase Over $70bn From Valuation, Stoking Artificial Intelligence Hype Anxiety.

The tech firm's lackluster latest earnings have erased in excess of $70 billion from the value of the software and data giant co-founded by billionaire Larry Ellison, heightening mounting concerns of a speculative bubble in artificial intelligence stocks.

Steep Share Price Drop Comes After Revenue Shortfall

Stock in the company tumbled by over 11 percent in after-hours trading after it reported a lower-than-expected 14 percent rise in sales to $sixteen billion dollars in the latest quarter, as it simultaneously disclosed plans to boost its artificial intelligence investment by approximately $15 billion.

The enterprise recorded disappointing quarterly revenues for the period ending in November, with sales at its core cloud services division growing at a slower pace than forecast, at 34%.

Market Concerns Over Spending and Debt

Markets were also let down by a slower than expected sixty-eight percent growth in income from its cloud infrastructure unit.

At the same time, the market were unnerved by the firm's elevated forecasts for AI investment. It now expects capex to jump by forty percent to $fifty billion dollars, with the bulk of the increase allocated for constructing data centres.

This heavy spending plan is set against a growing debt load, with Oracle's corporate debt having jumped by 25% over the past year to reach $nearly one hundred billion dollars.

"Honestly, the report was not catastrophic, but it came to confirm worries around heavy AI spending, funded through debt, with an unclear timeframe for returns," commented a market analyst.

Wider Sector Repercussions and Industry Risks

Continued optimism about the potential of AI tech has led to a sharp rise in stock prices in the past year, but there has been a rising number of warnings from policymakers and business leaders who say equity prices could plummet if investors ended up being let down by the development or adoption of AI solutions.

While Oracle has become an important tech player developing enterprise solutions for large corporations worldwide and has in recent years grown rapidly in the cloud sector, analysts point to growing questions about how reliant firms are becoming on circular funding within the AI ecosystem.

Oracle reported that its metric of remaining performance obligations jumped by 440% over the past year. However, market watchers were skeptical when it emerged that these contracts were driven by new commitments from other tech giants like Meta and Amazon.

"Although these are two solid customers, it will not soothe concerns that big tech's AI investments are interdependent, which makes the sector vulnerable to a loss of market faith," observed a research director.

"Overall, robust backlog increase was not enough to placate anxiety about AI and the huge amount of investment spending needed by firms to construct AI infrastructure."

Broader Sell-Off in Tech Stocks

Additional technology stocks also fell in after-hours trading following the Oracle results. Key performers included:

  • Nvidia: Share price fell by 1.3%.
  • Alphabet (Google): Stock dropped by 0.3 percent.
  • SoftBank: In Japan, the AI investor shares tumbled by 7.7 percent on Thursday.
