Fierce Winds Leave Tens of Thousands Without Power in the Island Nation

Storm damage in New Zealand
Citizens urged to avoid going out as severe gales strike the nation.

Severe gales reaching velocities of approximately 155km/h (96mph) have resulted in around 90,000 households lacking electricity and compelled authorities to halt over 100 aircraft departures, based on local media.

These gusts are affecting the entire southern region and southern parts of the northern region, according to the country's meteorological service.

Officials in New Zealand have announced uncommon severe gust advisories - the most severe warning - in core zones encompassing Canterbury and Wellington.

People have been advised to remain inside, stay off roads, and get ready for further electricity and network failures.

Widespread Destruction and Crisis Measures

The electricity loss appears to be affecting households mainly in the southern region, while authorities report that the electricity supply was being restored progressively.

Local media have indicated that in certain areas homes have lost their roofs, and utility poles and vegetation have been brought down by the gales.

Across Wellington, a man was killed after being hit by a tree branch at a well-known hiking path on Tuesday.

Meanwhile in Wellington, a female was pushed toward approaching vehicles on a thoroughfare by a intensive burst, in a moment that was recorded in a widely shared car camera footage.

Aircraft services to and from the metropolis have been cancelled because of the weather, and certain highways and community centers are also closed.

Simultaneously local leaders have declared a crisis declaration, to facilitate recovery activities.

Work Stoppages Amid Severe Weather

These intense gusts on today occur while tens of thousands of school staff, physicians and civil servants take part in what has been described as a "significant labor action", calling for better pay and working conditions.

But the severe conditions has forced them to modify some of their plans, with some outdoor rallies moved indoors or abandoned.

Similar gusts are affecting Australia, ushering in a period of extreme heat to the remote areas.

Agencies have declared flame prohibitions for apprehension regarding bushfires.
