Following a conclusive runoff election, ultra-conservative figure José Antonio Kast has won the top job in Chile.
A Resounding Triumph
With more than 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the vote, overcoming leftist contender Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third bid for the presidency, having in the past been defeated by the current president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 runoff.
Agenda Centered On Law and Order and Migration
Recognized for his unwavering socially conservative views and praise for the rule of dictator Augusto Pinochet, Kast's platform was largely centered on promises to tackle rising insecurity and radically curb immigration.
He consistently cited foreigners, especially the roughly 330,000 illegal individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the race, he issued an ultimatum for them to depart before the new term begins or face expulsion.
His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as erecting detention centers, barriers, security fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northern frontier.
Amid a Continental Trend
Many analysts interpret Kast's win as part of a broader rightward shift in the region, similar to recent political outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other experts additionally frame it as a continuation of the regular alternation of power between left-wing and right administrations since Chile's transition to democracy in 1990.
Ruling Without a Solid Majority
Despite his clear popular vote triumph, Kast does not hold an clear majority in the legislature, neither in the Chamber of Deputies or the Senate, even if various conservative parties are combined together.
