Manchester United Poised to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are finalising sealing the deal for prolific German forward Lea Schüller in a permanent move from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
Schüller, who has six months remaining on her contract, has been a prolific goalscorer for her club and the national team. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and found the net 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she was seen fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its top forwards. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Reliable Goal Threat to Strengthen United's Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s signing should represent a significant uplift to the team's attacking options. Schüller has been highly reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the Golden Boot in 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when the club seem to be gathering momentum.
Their recent on-pitch successes feature qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a win in the League Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the winter break has brought further activity:
- The signing of Sweden right-back Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese midfielder Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since joining in 2023.
On the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
