New Year Revelers Told to Wrap Up Warm with Snow Expected Throughout the UK
Forecasters have indicated a frosty beginning to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Celebrants have been told to bundle up as near-freezing temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Festive Celebrations Go Ahead Despite Warnings
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, unlike last year's calling-off. This comes despite advisories for snow across northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so warmer clothes will be necessary," noted the weather service.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Cold Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and clear skies. The mercury are forecast to be chilly, meaning extra layers a necessity, said forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not expected to affect visibility for seeing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you will likely be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Broad Advisories for New Year's Day
As we enter Friday, advisories are in place for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

- People have been urged to leave additional time for travel on the road.
- Delays and cancellations are likely on public transport.
The Mercury Set to Fall Even More
As 2026 begins, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," commented forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are predicted to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is forecast to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.
Health Advisories Released
Meanwhile, serious cold weather health warnings are in force for the north-east and north-west of England. These are set to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials explained this indicated the weather was expected to lead to notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This involves a expected uptick in the number of deaths among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
