The direst potential impacts of the global heating for the UK have been mapped by experts, including a scorching 4C jump in average temperatures to a 6.5-foot increase in sea level. An alternative projection foresees a decline of 6C in temperature following the shutdown of critical Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt food production and energy needs.
Plausible Extremes, Not Predictions
These effects, certain ones are connected to climate tipping points, are considered as unlikely but credible. The scientists explained that these models filled a gap in risk assessment that had rendered the UK unprepared for extreme outcomes.
"The severe weather events we have mapped should not be seen as certainties, but they are plausible," stated the lead researcher who directed the research. A Spectrum of Harsh Climate Scenarios
Another collection of worst-case scenarios maps the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These show that thermometer readings could soar in some months by up to 6C above average, while precipitation could be 300% of standard measurements.
The chance of the catastrophic events happening remains uncertain due to uncertainty about what measures will be taken to address climate change and how the Earth's systems will react. This approach was compared to security threat evaluations or resilience checks for financial systems.

- Four-Degree Warming: Worldwide averages soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation collapses or if powerful amplifying effects like the Amazon rainforest dying unleash its vast reserves of carbon. This would result in severe and lengthy heatwaves and water shortages plaguing the UK in summer.
- Atlantic Current Collapse: A key circulation system, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and becoming unstable due to global heating. A full shutdown beginning in 2030 would lead to a drastic cooling in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and water resources would be fundamentally reshaped," noted the professor.
