Rory McIlroy salutes BBC's top sports success with individual and team honors.

Seconds before he was crowned, a anxious idea raced through his mind. He admitted he was thinking, "Not a racing champion once more."

"It's been a great night for golf," the champion said. "Golf was celebrated in such a major way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and perhaps we can build upon that."

In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The outcome was uncontested, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to enjoy a standout evening for both himself and the continental winners, who were crowned team of the year.

Constant Motion

Choosing not to stay for the official reception, McIlroy was already focusing on his immediate plans. Having just played in a tournament in Florida and flown to the UK, he was flying right back to Florida.

"The last 24 hours have been a whirlwind 24 hours," the golfer noted. "I am anticipating a little bit of rest over Christmas."

Unfinished Business

However, McIlroy insisted he has no plans to become complacent, even after securing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I still feel I've got a several strong seasons in me," he claimed.

"Additional major championships, season-long rankings, team competitions, that's great. But as long as you feel like you can keep getting better and have the hunger, that's the key."

Squad Celebration

At the same time, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to accept the squad honor, also lauded golf's remarkable night and his pal's individual success.

"They are the times that will stay with us for all time so to get the people's vote for that is truly special," he commented. "And to be there Rory win, I think he deserves it so much."

After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third in his sport to win the award in its seven-decade run, Fleetwood chuckled before adding, "Golfers aren't top of the list are we!"

Next Targets

He is aiming to at last capture his maiden major next year but he acknowledged McIlroy still craves more success. "Provided that you want to be the ultimate competitor, and you're still driven, you'll find things to enhance," Fleetwood explained.

United Hopes

Before McIlroy left, one final question came up. Being a massive Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be tempted to do it again after his latest triumphs?

"If they stop conceding multiple scores in Manchester," he replied with a smile. "Improvements are being made. There's a hint of optimism around."

Following a remarkable year, it's understandable that the champion golfer is focusing on the upside.
