Sandy Baltimore Penalty Saves The Blues Following Twente Threaten WCL Shock
Europe's premier competition continues to be Chelsea's hard-to-catch trophy. They crave it intensely. Yet, their credentials took a hit in the Netherlands, a stalemate against Twente not at all the perfect beginning to a tournament they aim to conquer.
In spite of their dominance in possession, it was who took the lead, via skipper Danique van Ginkel, prior to Sandy Baltimore converted from the spot to level the scores.
Domestic Dominance Yet Continental Disappointment
Each piece of silverware is precious, yet for the team which has consistently triumphed domestically, the yearning for the missing trophy is intense. It escaped them during Emma Hayes’ tenure, defeat to Barcelona in the 2020-21 final the nearest they came. Three straight semi-final defeats to Barcelona, including an 8-2 aggregate loss last season, have stung each time.
Team Changes Takes Its Toll
The coach flexed the team's strength ahead of the visit to the Netherlands, with only four starters from the previous match in the lineup, but it proved expensive as they began their Champions League campaign in a new era – the group stage replaced by expanded stage akin to the men's tournament.
These two teams faced off in last season's group stage, with the Blues handing out a 9-2 aggregate defeat on the Dutch champions. The captain remarked they'd look somewhat different one year on. “I hope we've grown somewhat and can address our past mistakes,” she added.
Twente's Maturity On Display
On home turf that maturity was evident, Twente didn't attempt to match the Blues' pressure or engage individually, they were an efficient unit, irritating the Blues who launched repeated attacks toward the goal.

However, the hosts created the best opportunity in the first period. Leonie Vliek had room after a neat exchange with Jill Roord, but instead of shooting she squared to their leading striker but the effort was cleared by the defense.
There was energy but a lack of cohesion, the changes taking a toll, especially in the final third. Maika Hamano should have done better with a chance but fired over from close range in their best effort, while the keeper helped keep Twente in it.
After the Break Action
In the second half, a recent addition scored a goal, turning in a driven ball, yet the assistant went up, the passer having been offside.
The manager looked to the substitutes in an attempt to alter the dynamics shortly later. Two starters were replaced, including one with a concussion, for fresh legs and an ex- Twente player.
Missed Chances
Twente had a clear opportunity to go ahead right around the hour mark. Having won possession in attack, a low cross found a player at the far post yet a challenge prevented the goal.
The hosts' chances were scarce and as each passed without scoring, it felt like the home side would be punished. Yet, it was the Blues ruing their wastefulness. A pass back reached the captain who moved onto her right foot and struck past the goalkeeper.
Leveling Penalty
Chelsea continued pressing. They haven't delivered exciting performances this term yet they've earned points and away from home they continued that trend. A foul on a player gave the visitors a penalty, though they could have earned one earlier when a late boot caught a player. Baltimore converted to tie the game.
A winner escaped them, yet they possess chances to recover against upcoming opponents ahead of meeting old rivals and former champions.
