DJ Warras was shot by a suspect with dreadlocked hair in the middle of the day, police say.

A prominent South African radio and club DJ has been shot dead in the country's largest city Johannesburg, sending shockwaves across a country battling persistent crime.

Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was attacked in the downtown area on a Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the forty-year-old entertainer was accosted by three suspects, with one opened fire on him before escaping on foot.

The motive behind the attack has not been established and no arrests have been made, police said.

How It Happened

Police revealed that Stock was targeted as he was leaving a location in the vicinity of the city center landmark.

He had been present for hours at the property overseeing the setup of safety equipment, which had been reportedly taken over by unknown people, according to reports.

"The report indicates the man was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they began shooting at him before fleeing the scene on foot," an official report stated.

CCTV footage reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocked hair and wearing what looked like a protective services outfit opening fire on Stock before fleeing.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but fell down across the street.

Officials noted that Stock had an unused firearm and no items were stolen during the assault.

Important clues, like cartridges, were recovered from the crime scene.

Call for Public Assistance

Officials are asking members of the public who may have witnessed the attack to assist with the investigation.

"Evidence suggests they walked a long distance after the attack, and police have been following their trail to determine their whereabouts," remarked an authority figure.

A Nation in Mourning

His family member, Nicole Stock, expressed the relatives are devastated to process his death.

"I am devastated. I am shattered," were her words.
"Everyone understood he was a champion for numerous individuals. He was a fearless commentator about topics not many people were willing to discuss. This is a tremendous loss."

She requested the public to avoid sharing disturbing footage from the scene, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, above all for Stock's young family.

A Multifaceted Career

Stock was the host of Ngicel' iVisa, a reality show that was broadcast on a South African broadcasting platform.

In addition to his media career, Stock was engaged in various business ventures, including protective services, supplying VIP protection services and managing safety for major functions across South Africa.

He was also reportedly involved in building administration and assisted with property reclaimations.

National Shock

His death has caused national trauma and prompted an flood of condolences from his fans, the government and political parties.

A cabinet official remarked he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's untimely death.

"He expressed his views boldly and honestly. He even challenged me and my policies as a minister. He was a pure example of who we ought to be," the minister added.

A public representative said the "audacious attack of DJ Warras in the middle of the day is a tragedy for all South Africans".

A broadcasting director said that "Stock was far beyond a face of a reality series. He was a skilled narrator, a passionate music lover and a warm soul who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His dedication to creativity left an indefinable mark."

In a release, the network he worked for said Stock was known for his charisma, warmth and quick humor, adding that his influence "will be remembered".

South Africa, the continent's most industrialised nation, has one of the world's highest rates of violent death, exacerbated by theft-related violence and syndicate wars, with some 63 people killed each day between April and September, as per government figures.
