The Reason Real Madrid Possess 'Total Trust' in Youngster Pitarch
Whenever a teenage makes Real Madrid a historic moment in a pivotal European match against Manchester City, it naturally attracts acclaim and attention.
During his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the club - Thiago Pitarch made a strong impression as the fifteen-time European champions secured a 3-0 round of 16 first leg lead at the Santiago Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also had his Real debut in the qualifying round a month ago with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then assisted Los Blancos overcome the English Premier League side in Tuesday's second leg to confirm a last eight place.
Aged 18 years and 226 days, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to begin two matches in the Champions League's latter rounds, surpassing star Vini Jr's record by a week and a half.
A Meteoric Rise Through The Academy
The midfielder is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising young players.
He signed for Madrid from CD Leganes in 2023, having previously been with Atletico and Getafe academies, and initially featuring for the Juvenil C team, where he quickly made a positive impact.
Pitarch worked his way up to the B team and it was in a pre-season game in which they played against the senior squad, then managed by the former defender, where the youngster is said to have drawn the eye of the current Real boss, who replaced the previous coach in the new year.
Spanish media would later label the moment as "love at first sight," noting Pitarch stood out not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he added to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Personality'
During the pre-season of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso called up the youngster to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes during the warm-up matches.
Yet, it was Arbeloa's appointment that proved the defining moment in his career as he came on as a second-half replacement in both ties against the Portuguese side that led to the meeting with Manchester City.
"I have dreamed of this each night before going to bed, the very first time I started playing football, each day you go to train and each day you play a match," stated Pitarch following his first appearance.
"I've just fulfilled my dream with the best team in the planet and in the best competition."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against Getafe - where he was for four years after arriving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his spot for the next four as fitness issues to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos provided an opportunity.
The teenager has taken it with displays that have defied his youth and inexperience.
"He is a very quick player, and you can observe his capabilities," remarked Arbeloa. "He is extremely energetic, with excellent endurance, effort and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his personality," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the possession, and even under pressure, he doesn't feel it.
"I understand fans might be surprised to see him start in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had complete confidence in him to do what he usually does.
"He will keep receiving opportunities with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a talent like him."
Spain or Morocco?
Born in Fuenlabrada, in the Spanish capital's community, and grew up deeply involved in the local game, moving through youth setups before joining the club's famous La Fabrica system.
He holds both Moroccan and Spanish nationality, offering him the choice to play for both nations at the highest level.
According to Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at junior level without being permanently tied, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive full international.
Pitarch has featured for Spain at underage levels, representing both the U19 and U20 sides, and participated in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where La Roja made it to the last eight.
Nevertheless, he has yet to commit to any senior national team, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, the player said: "I have not taken my final decision so far. My situation is positive with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a conclusion in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other dual nationality players such as Real team-mate Diaz and Barca star Lamine Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal chose Spain, Diaz decided to represent Morocco.
Focus on the Future
For now, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and rewarding his manager's belief.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one aggregate success and a last-eight tie with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel to emphasise Arbeloa's trust in younger players to help the team pursue future success.
Following his impressive impact to date on the Champions League, Pitarch is tipped to play a key role in that.
"The manager handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I have to deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the success at Etihad Stadium.
