The retail giant Enforces Purchase Limits on Pokémon Trading Cards

In a significant move, Walmart has started enforcing strict limits on how many Pokémon trading card products customers can acquire during one shopping trip. This policy was activated as of early November, according to an internal announcement distributed to employees.

Tackling Reseller Problems

While not officially confirmed by Walmart, numerous sources suggest this decision was prompted by a widely shared social media clip that showed a customer buying an enormous quantity of Pokémon card products at a checkout counter. The employee featured in the video faced significant criticism for permitting the bulk transaction to proceed.

Rule Specifics and Possible Weaknesses

The new restriction states that shoppers may only buy up to five trading card packs or boxes each time they enter. However, the wording has sparked debate due to its vagueness. Precisely what qualifies as a "box" remains unclear, and if someone could buy five high-value Elite Trainer Boxes remains ambiguous.

Moreover, because the restriction is based on individual trips, in theory an eager reseller could make multiple trips—buying five items each time—to gather large quantities throughout the day.

The Reseller Crisis

To most players, this approach might seem over the top, yet for resellers, it's common behavior. In recent years, scalpers have significantly added to widespread shortages of Pokémon cards, driven by the TCG's growing fame.

Some resellers aim to sell unopened products at a markup, while others hunt for valuable pulls that can command extraordinary prices. As an example, a specific Mega Evolution card from the latest set has been listed for over $800 on various platforms.

Looking Ahead

The new rule aligns with the approaching launch of the Phantasmal Flames set, coming on November 14th. Pre-release sales already show premium cards like the Charizard mega evolution listed for around fifteen hundred dollars, highlighting the ongoing demand and potential reseller attention.

Hopefully, Walmart's restrictions will curb mass buying and increase access for true fans and casual players as well.
